Heading into the playoffs, it’s worth noting (again) that this has been a very successful season for NFL underdog bettors. Underdogs covered at a 55.5 per cent clip overall and a lot of that was because there was no real home-field advantage. Home teams went only 127-128-1 straight up and 127-129 against the spread (ATS). So before you start clicking on all of this weekend’s home favourites, keep that in mind. The four best remaining ATS teams in the playoffs are Buffalo (11-5), Baltimore (10-5-1), and Green Bay and Pittsburgh at 10-6 each.
Buffalo kicks off Wild-Card weekend on Saturday afternoon at home against the Indianapolis Colts. The Bills opened at -6.5 and have moved to -7 with a lofty 51.5-point total. Early action is on the Bills and over the total for that one. The Seahawks are 4-point favourites at home to the Los Angeles Rams in the late afternoon game before the Buccaneers visit Washington in Saturday’s nightcap. The Bucs are actually the most popular bet of the weekend, seeing better than 80 per cent of point spread bets as a big 8.5-point road favourite. You might want to keep an eye on that spread.
On Sunday, the Ravens are another road favourite at -3 in Tennessee before the New Orleans Saints host the Chicago Bears. After sneaking into the playoffs, the Bears are the weekend’s biggest underdog at +10.5. Bettors like the Bears to cover and over the 47-point total. To close out Wild-Card weekend, the Cleveland Browns visit the Pittsburgh Steelers. The Steelers have moved from -3.5 at the open all the way to -6.5 and, despite their late-season skid, have covered in four of the last five meetings between these teams.
With the NHL resuming with a 56-game regular season schedule next week, the hockey odds board is full. The Toronto Maple Leaf’s are easily the most popular futures bet right now. They’re at +748 to win the Stanley Cup (just behind the +514 favourite Colorado Avalanche) while Toronto’s point total over/under is at 74.5. Auston Matthews is also the +327 favourite to win the Maurice “Rocket” Richard Trophy as the league’s top goal scorer. Toronto is also at +131 to win the all-Canadian North Division ahead of the Edmonton Oilers (+412), Montreal Canadiens (+418), and Calgary Flames (+497).
