It’s rare to see betting trends last more than a couple of weeks in the NFL, but heading into Week 5, underdogs are on a major roll. Last week underdogs barked again going 10-5 against the spread (ATS) with eight of those dogs winning outright. NFL underdogs are now 37-25-1 ATS on the year, including 25 money-line wins.
Week 5 kicks off with a pair of 3-1 squads as the Los Angeles Rams visiting the Seattle Seahawks on Thursday Night Football. Oddsmakers had the Seahawks set as 2.5-point underdogs at the open, but that line has moved to Seattle -1.5. This weekend the Chicago Bears and Oakland Raiders continue the NFL in Europe campaign as they square off in London at 1 p.m. ET with Chicago set as a 5-point favourite. Thanks to a nasty defence, the Bears have rebounded to win three straight after dropping their season-opener. Eight of Chicago’s last night games have played under their posted over/unders.
Meanwhile, the Green Bay Packers are pegged as underdogs as they visit Dallas. The Cowboys opened as 4.5-point favourites, but with better than 70 percent of bettors on the Pack, that line has shifted to Dallas -3.5. The Cowboys rank third overall in total offence and seventh in total defence.
In Sunday Night Football the Kansas City Chiefs, one of three unbeaten teams, are the second-biggest favourite on the board at -11 at home to the Indianapolis Colts. The New England Patriots, also at 4-0, are 15.5-point favourites on the road in Washington. Despite the current trend of underdogs covering, more than 90 percent of bets are on New England to win against the spread.
Outside of the Pats, the Baltimore Ravens and Los Angeles Chargers are the two most popular picks for Week 5. The Ravens are 3.5-point favourites at Pittsburgh and the Chargers are -6.5 at home to the winless Denver Broncos.
The regular season of the National Hockey League finally opens on Wednesday night with the Toronto Maple Leafs taking on the Ottawa Senators. The Leafs remain the most popular bet on the Stanley Cup futures board at +800, just behind the Tampa Bay Lightning at +750. Other popular picks include the Boston Bruins at +1000, the Dallas Stars at +1200, and the Nashville Predators at +1700. The Leafs are at home again on Saturday for a classic Hockey Night in Canada matchup with the Montreal Canadiens. The Habs are seeing some support to go over 89.5 points in the regular season and at +109 to make the playoffs.
