Week 4 in NFL play was an even split for oddsmakers and bettors, with favourites going 7-7-1 against the spread (ATS) while over/unders ended up at 7-7-1 as well. On the year, favourites are 32-30-1 ATS while the over is riding a 32-26-1 clip heading into Week 5’s Thursday Night Football matchup that has the Chicago Bears hosting the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The Bears opened as field-goal underdogs at home, but the Bucs have become the week’s most popular bet so far. With more than 90 percent of the action coming in on Tampa Bay, the spread has now moved to Bucs -3.5.
A couple of teams are making starting quarterback changes with the New York Jets calling on veteran Joe Flacco to step in for Sam Darnold, and Washington turning to Kyle Allen instead of Dwayne Haskins. Despite those moves, bettors don’t want any part of Washington or the Jets. The L.A. Rams are 7-point favourites on the road in Washington, while the Arizona Cardinals are 7-point favourites at the Jets. More than 80 percent of bettors like the road clubs in each of those two games.
It’s looking like NFL bettors will be dealing with some big point spreads as Week 5 kickoffs near. As of this writing four games have point spreads of 9.5 points or more. The Baltimore Ravens are 13-point favourites at home to Cleveland, the Cowboys are 9.5-point favourites at home to the Giants, and the Colts are 10-point favourites as they host the Bengals. The Raiders vs. Chiefs matchup also had K.C. as a 13.5-point favourite, but that line is currently off the board.
The books are expecting a ton of points on the board for the Sunday Night Football matchup between the Minnesota Vikings and the Seattle Seahawks. The Seahawks, 4-0 straight up and against the spread, are touchdown favourites with the over/under set at 57.5.
Monday Night Football has the Los Angeles Chargers visiting the New Orleans Saints. Early odds have the Saints as 7.5-point favourites with a total of 51. More than 85 percent of bettors like the over in that one.
The Los Angeles Lakers have a chance to claim the Larry O’Brien Trophy on Friday night as they hold a 3-1 series lead over the Miami Heat. The Lakers are set as 7-point favourites and are at -333 to finish the series in Game 5.
The Stanley Cup may have just been awarded last week, but odds are already available for next year. The Colorado Avalanche opened as the +589 favourite to win the 2021 title, followed by the Vegas Golden Knights at +677 and this year’s champion, the Tampa Bay Lightning, at +682.
