Finally, Opening Day is upon us. The 60-game MLB regular season will begin Thursday as the New York Yankees visit the Washington Nationals and the San Francisco Giants face the Dodgers in Los Angeles. The Yanks and Dodgers head into Thursday as co-World Series favourites at +375 apiece. The Toronto Blue Jays open their season Friday in Tampa Bay, with the highly-touted Hyun-Jin Ryu making his first start for the club. Oddsmakers currently have the Jays as +140 underdogs. Toronto certainly has a lot of young talent, but the books aren’t convinced this team is ready to contend yet. The Jays’ season win total is set at 28.5 victories and they’re pegged at +450 to make the playoffs.
The UFC’s third event on Fight Island is set for Saturday night and could be the best one we’ve seen yet. In the main event, it’s a middleweight contender bout between Darren Till and Robert Whittaker. Till, the +100 underdog, has lost two of his last three, while Whittaker (-130) hopes a win here will get him a rematch with champion Isreal Adesanya. The co-main will be the final fight of Antonio Rogerio Nogueira’s career as he is ready for retirement at the age of 44. He’s a +165 underdog against Maurico “Shogun” Rua. Meanwhile, Alexander Gustafsson makes his debut at heavyweight and is a -370 favourite former champion Fabrico Werdum.
We’re now just days away from NHL action. The league will give each team a few exhibition games next week before the games start meaning something next weekend with the play-in round and the round robin between each of the conference’s top four teams. The Montreal Canadiens are currently the biggest underdog in series prices as they’re set at +173 against the Pittsburgh Penguins, while the Toronto Maple Leafs are big -193 favourites against the Columbus Blue Jackets. An all-Canadian matchup between the Winnipeg Jets and Calgary Flames is basically a Pick ‘em with the Flames currently at -118 with the Jets at -117. The Tampa Bay Lightning are the Stanley Cup favourites at +500, just ahead of the Boston Bruins at +550.
The Toronto Raptors get back to work on Aug. 1 with a tough matchup against LeBron James and the Los Angeles Lakers. The Raptors opened as 4-point underdogs. That will be one of eight regular season games before the playoffs begin. The Lakers are +175 favourites to win the NBA Championship, with the reigning champion Raptors set at +750.
