Tidy profit: The biggest ever roulette wins
We mere mortals can only dream of winning big at the roulette table.
Many have tried and many have failed to get one up on the casino owner but big wins are an occurrence, some rarer than others.
Most punters will try and in-corporate strategies or techniques that are a sure-fire way to win, but often players are left disappointed.
It’s not the case for everybody, though, with some eye-watering amounts of money being collected by lucky punters over the years.
Here, we take a look at some of the biggest wins in the history of roulette:
Mike Ashley – £820,000 profit
Billionaire entrepreneur Mike Ashley is a name more associated with business than striking rich at the casino. Ashley is also the owner of Premier League football side Newcastle United, but his roulette win in 2008 surpassed any of his previous ventures.
Ashley is a man who’ll be all too familiar with taking a gamble or two and after walking into London’s Fifty Casino, left with a cool £820,000 profit after one spin at the tables. Ashley wagered a total of £480,000 on every inside bet including the number 17. The ‘complete bet’ came in after the ball landed on the number 17 itself. Blimey.
Charles Wells – £2,000,000 profit
Avid gambling fanatics will be all too familiar with the story of small-time crook Charles Wells. In 1891, Wells travelled to the Monte Carlo Casino Resort and tried his luck at roulette. Reports claim he won a staggering 23 out of 30 spins which in turn, ‘broke the bank,’ meaning that the table was quite literally out of cash.
Wells won close to a million Francs that night and returned a short time after to try his luck again. As chance would have it, Wells collected another million Francs but not before the casino could prove there was no dishonesty to his play. Nothing was proven as such but unfortunately for Wells, he was thrown in jail for eight years after his former life as a crook and scammer came back to haunt him. Unlucky, eh.
Sir Phillip Green – £2,000,000 profit
Another British entrepreneur makes the list but this time in the shape of Sir Phillip Green. The business tycoon was a regular at Les Ambassadeurs throughout 2004, and it’s believed that Green accumulated £2m playing roulette over the course of a series of visits.
Green’s wins actually had a knock-on effect that meant that Les Ambassadeurs issued a warning to investors. So many big wins were being paid out the share price dropped by 6p. However, Green wasn’t too concerned with that after his win: “I had a fantastic night at the tables,” proclaimed Green to a friend shortly after winning. You don’t say!
Pedro Grendene Bartelle – $3,365,000
The third and final businessman to make the list, Pedro Grendene Bartelle is a highly successful entrepreneur hailing from Brazil. He and his brother co-founded a sandal manufacturing company that is now worth over £1b, but perhaps his roulette win in 2017 is what he is most renowned for.
French roulette was Bartelle’s game of choice and is now probably his most favourite. After staking $35,000 on or around the number 32, the number come up trumps and Bartelle made the largest ever roulette profit in history. Nice work!
